On surprise visits and giving thanks

If I had written this post a week+ ago, on actual Thanksgiving, it would have been written a lot differently. On Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 24, 2011 – I was pregnant. I was nearing my due date (today), but *so* sure our son would be born a few days late.

Now, though. Now my story is completely different, and now I know what true love really is.

On Saturday, November 26, 2011, our son entered this big, beautiful world of ours at 11:41 pm. He was 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and 19.5 inches.

He was perfect. He is perfect.

Welcoming E on Saturday was such a surprise. Like I mentioned earlier, I was convinced he would be a couple days late… especially after our last check-up at the doctor the Wednesday prior. There was almost no activity at that point – no dilation, nothing. Thanksgiving came and went (I was lucky enough to get two Thanksgiving meals, but that’s not what this post is about) with nothing more than, “No water breaking at the table!” jokes.

(My water did not break at the table. Not on Thursday, and not at our second Thanksgiving on Friday.)

I’ll save the whole birth story for another day… but when contractions started on Saturday, I was so convinced E would be late that I was also convinced the contractions weren’t actually contractions. Obviously, though, they were – because shortly after 11:30 that night, I was holding my son in my arms in complete awe.

… and completely, head over heels, more than you can ever describe because you have to feel it to understand, love.

Welcoming E on Saturday was such a surprise, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So now, as I write this post on giving thanks, more than a week after Thanksgiving and on the day our son was supposed to be born… I am thankful for so much more than a healthy pregnancy and two awesome turkey/mashed potato/stuffing/pumpkin pie meals.

Today, I am thankful for a healthy son (who is now almost a week old!), a happy marriage, absolutely amazing family, and this beautiful, beautiful life.

Thank you so much Caryn! Just so you know, I edited your comment to remove E’s full name – trying to keep it out of text if at all possible. 🙂

I never thought about that, me being a mommy blogger now…. ha! Weird!
